Each is its own beat — a milestone, a worry, a question the principal is sitting with, a piece of work they want feedback on. The letter should advance an actual relationship with the reader, not summarize the company. 4. THE CANDOR MOMENT One line or paragraph that says something the comms team would prefer they didn't. Not gossip; not negligence. A real admission, a hard call, a thing they got wrong, or a question they don't have an answer to. This is what makes the newsletter forwardable. 5. WHAT I'M ASKING OF YOU If this is a customer or operator audience: a specific, low-friction ask. Intros, candidates, feedback on a specific question. If this is investors: an update on what they should pay attention to. Avoid generic "let me know if I can help" closings. 6. WHAT I'M READING / WATCHING / BUILDING Optional recurring section. Three to five items. The principal's voice. Mix of internal-to-the-company and external-to-the-industry. This is the section that makes the newsletter habitual. 7. SIGN-OFF First name. Personal email signature, not the company's. Reply-to is the principal's actual address (or one they monitor). Voice rules: - Read aloud test: every paragraph should pass it. - Avoid "growing," "scaling," "doubling down," "incredible," "humbled." - Specificity over generalization. "Three of our customers" beats "many customers." - The candor moment is the entire test of the letter. If it could have been written by anyone in marketing, it isn't a personal newsletter. If the date slips, this becomes a credibility problem at exactly the wrong moment. Confirm the launch window before issue goes out, or soften to "the next 30-60 days."
Tips for best results
- 1The candor moment is the test. If the newsletter could have been sent by anyone in marketing, it isn't a personal newsletter.
- 2Read the draft out loud once. The sections you stumble on are the ones written in someone else's voice.
- 3Smaller, qualified audiences outperform broader ones. A 200-person letter to top customers and investors is worth more than a 20,000-person company newsletter.
- 4Reply-to should be the principal's real address. The 'do not reply' newsletter is the death of the personal voice.
- 5When the comms team objects to a paragraph, ask whether the objection is reputational (legitimate) or aesthetic (corporate-grain). Defend the candor; revise the rest.
