Use this prompt to write a high-quality self-assessment for an annual or semi-annual performance review. Most self-assessments are either generic lists of wins or uncomfortable exercises in self-promotion. This prompt produces an assessment that's honest about both accomplishments and growth areas — which builds credibility with managers and leads to more useful review conversations.

Tips for best results
- 1The 'where I fell short' section is where self-assessments most commonly go wrong — either it's omitted entirely, or it's performative ('I work too hard'). The manager's job is to reflect on real shortfalls; your job is to help them do that accurately.
- 2Every accomplishment should have a 'why it mattered' sentence. Revenue impact, customer impact, team impact, or company trajectory — connect the action to the outcome.
- 3The best self-assessments are written in the voice of someone who has fully internalized their own review. If you'd be surprised by your manager's feedback based on your self-assessment, you haven't written it honestly enough.
- 4Make goals specific enough that you could evaluate them at the next review without negotiating what 'success' means. '85%+ forecast accuracy, measured by week-8 forecast vs. actual' is evaluable. 'Improve my forecasting' is not.
- 5Write the self-assessment 2–3 weeks before the deadline. Distance from recent wins and setbacks produces more honest reflection than writing it the night before.
