Anchor is an operations analytics tool that doesn't require any technical expertise. Even if Amplitude built a 'lite' product, they'd be fighting the complexity of their existing architecture to make it work. I'm more worried about a purpose-built competitor from a team that comes at this problem the way we did — that's the scenario I spend more time thinking about."
*Avoid:* "They're enterprise focused, so we're safe" — this sounds naive to investors who've watched many up-market players pivot. Be specific about the structural reasons they won't (or can't) move down.

## Category 5: Fundraise and Use of Funds
**Q: Why $12M and why now? Why not wait until you have more traction?**
Key elements: The timing question is a valuation question in disguise — you could raise at a higher valuation with more traction, but you'd use 6 more months of runway getting there. Make the tradeoff explicit.
*Sample answer:* "Fair question. The math is: at $410K/month burn and 9.5 months of runway, we have a window of about 5–6 months to complete a raise before runway becomes the dominant variable. We could wait until $2.5M ARR — which might be Q3 or Q4 — and likely get a better valuation. But we'd be raising with 3 months of runway rather than 9, and a compressed fundraise is a worse fundraise. The Q3 timing also lets Signal adoption data mature — if we're at 50%+ of eligible customers and NRR has moved to 105%, that's a cleaner story. On the $12M number: that's 18 months of runway at the burn implied by our headcount plan, which puts us at $4.5M ARR — a Series B-ready number."

## Category 6: The Hard Questions
**Q: What's the most likely reason Anchor doesn't become a major company?**
Key elements: Investors ask this to test whether you have realistic self-awareness. The right answer is specific, non-defensive, and shows you've thought hard about it.
*Sample answer:* "The most likely failure mode is that Signal doesn't become the expansion lever we're modeling, and we end up as a good-but-not-great analytics dashboard with NRR that stays at 100–102% and a business that grows 40–50% per year rather than 80%+. At those growth rates and that NRR, we're a services-like business, not a platform business. The good outcome is that we're eventually acquired at a reasonable multiple. The bad outcome is that we spend 5 years building a business that's strategically important to our customers but never gets the scale to support a venture outcome. Signal is the bet against that failure mode — it's how a dashboard business becomes a platform."
*Avoid:* Vague answers about "execution risk" or "market timing." Investors have heard those — they want to see whether you can articulate your specific failure modes.

## Red Flags to Avoid
1. **Pivoting to strengths when asked about weaknesses.** Investors notice this and it destroys trust. If asked about CAC payback, answer the CAC payback question before pivoting to NRR.
2. **Using "the market" to explain underperformance.** "Market headwinds" is a deflection. If you missed plan, own the operational cause. Investors know markets are hard — they want to know what you're doing about it.
3. **Presenting TAM math that doesn't add up.** "$50B global analytics market" sounds good until the investor asks how you get to 1% of that. Lead with the bottoms-up market size (50,000 mid-market SaaS companies × $30K ACV = $1.5B), not the top-down number.
4. **Over-certainty about Q2 after a Q1 miss.** If Q1 was below plan, don't project Q2 with high confidence. Present the leading indicators (pipeline, AE ramp data) and the conditions under which Q2 will recover.
5. **Dismissing competitors.** "We don't really have direct competitors" is never true and always sounds naive. Know your competitors better than the investor does — and have a specific answer for why you win head-to-head.
Tips for best results
- 1Prepare for the follow-up, not just the initial question. Investors ask the second question specifically to test whether you actually believe your first answer or were just reciting a talking point.
